A RARE QUARTZITE HEAD OF BUDDHA

Thailand, Mon-Dvarvati Period (700 - 899 AD)

Quartzite, 15 in.

A monumental and important image of a deity, carved with heavy Khmer influence, having downcast eyes beneath sharply ridged and elegantly arched brows, above a broad nose and full, well-defined lips, and flanked by elongated pendulous earlobes.  The stone of black quartzite with scattered white inclusions.

A KALA TYMPANUM FRAGMENT

Cambodia, Angkor Period (900 - 999 AD)

Sandstone, 19.5 in.

Boldly and deeply carved in high relief with the fierce mask of a mythological monster issuing scrolling foliate tendrils and lotus blossoms borne on beaded leafy stems from its wide-open mouth.  A central fragment from a temple archway, representing time, change, and death.

A RARE ALTERED C-SCROLL DRAGON

China, Hongshan Period (3800 - 2900 BC)

Jade

A large pendant carved in the form of a curved dragon, the profile defined by a single backswept horn. The features are rendered in low relief, including torpedo-shaped eyes and a finely incised mouth. A suspension hole drilled through the body from both sides. Break to horn.
